5 Steps To Deal With Depression

5 Steps To Deal With Depression

Dear reader,

Hi, I’m Nicky. Recently, I’ve gone through some of the toughest times of my life. We all have dreams, hopes and ambitions, don’t we? But, life doesn’t go according to plan sometimes. It consistently throws in some obstacles, problems & issues. But as they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Indeed, it is very easy to think suicidal thoughts. You think maybe, just maybe, it will solve all your problems. But you know what’s even tougher? Staying alive & facing your problems, head-on. Your life is precious. You are loved. But unfortunately, all our problems cloud our mind and we only focus on the negative. I’m no expert, but as a friend, here are a few tips I would like to share, to help you overcome depression. These helped me come out of my depressed state of mind & I hope they help you too.

Firstly, be with someone you love and trust. It can be your family, your friends or your significant other. Make sure they know what you’re going through. If not, share it with them. Get it off your chest. It will make you feel lighter. They will calm you down with their soothing words and help you stay strong. They will be a source of strength while you’re dealing with your problems. When you know that there exists someone who deeply cares about your well-being, you will feel better about yourself.

Secondly, stop putting yourself down. Your brain has this capability to multiply the amount of problems you have. Things always look worse than they really are. We get paranoid, angry and make things go haywire. Remember, take a deep breath, clear your mind of everything and focus on the positive. ‘Things will be okay. This too shall pass. This is just a minor bump in the road. This is not the end of everything. I will get through this and I’ll be stronger than ever.’ Say this to yourself.

Thirdly, go out. When you stay within four walls for too long, it will start to suffocate you. Do all the things you enjoy to do. Whenever I went outside to eat with my friends, or even went shopping, it helped me get my mind off my problems. Also, it is recommended to expose yourself to a little sunlight every day. The bright sun, the outdoors, the nice breeze, the calming sound of the waves of the sea – all of these will help lift up your mood.

Remember to exercise everyday. Exercise results in a lot of positive effects which help you feel better and confident about yourself. Meditation and breathing exercises will help you cool down and soothe your soul.

Finally, get your eight hours of sleep. Lack of sleep creates more problems and makes you feel uneasy the rest of the day. Good sleep is important for the proper functioning of your brain.

Whatever it is that you are going through in your life right now, please know that it will turn out fine. You are amazing and you are important. Your opinions matter, you matter. You are loved. You’re strong. You have a great body just the way it is. You are beautiful. Your facial flaws are cute. You don’t need to impress anybody. You have someone to rely on. You are real. Your laughter is infectious. You have great qualities. You are the best.

Stay awesome, my friend.
Love,
Nicky.
